Priority issue areas of the AIC are those that are of immediate and high importance to all jurisdictions of the AIC. These important cross-jurisdictional issues become priorities of the AIC through consensus among all jurisdictions and are the main focus of AIC meetings and media.
Current AIC priorities:
- Strengthen AIC-federal partnerships and increase responsiveness to jurisdictional needs under the reauthorized U.S. Coral Reef Conservation Act
- Improve integration of jurisdictional priorities into efforts of the USCRTF Working Groups
- Secure dedicated long-term funding for the Susan L. Williams National Coral Reef Management Fellowship
- Continue to support establishment and enforcement of water quality standards that address impacts to coral reef health
- Advance resilience-based management practices in the U.S. and Freely Associated States
- Facilitate implementation of jurisdictional reef restoration plans, foster innovation in restoration efforts, and streamline permitting processes
- Enhance efficiency and effectiveness of disturbance response activities related to coral diseases (e.g., SCTLD), invasive species, bleaching events, vessel groundings, and hurricanes/typhoons
- Build capacity for effective and sustainable management of coral reef fisheries
AIC & U.S. Coral Reef Task Force Meetings
In-person AIC Meetings are held biannually and concurrently with U.S. Coral Reef Task Force (USCRTF) Meetings, in Washington, D.C. and, on a rotational basis, in each of the AIC member jurisdictions. At these meetings, AIC members discuss key policy issues, propose new actions, present progress reports, and update the coral community on accomplishments and future plans. Additionally, a report from the AIC Chair is provided to all Task Force members.
